Alleged Stonehenge restoration causes controversy
28 Jan 2001

Brian Edwards, a post-graduate student at the University of the West of England, has brought to light some photographs that allegedly reveal that Stonehenge is as much the work of today's caretakers as it is of the men of five-thousand years ago. These photographs have led some to form the opinion that the monument is not authentic, that it is merely an indication of how it would appear.

The situation is similar to the restoration of Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Painted between 1508 and 1512, the work had been blackened by burning candles and charcoal braziers.

While the restoration is meant to preserve the quality of the original painting, critics say that the process is changing its intended appearance by distorting the colors and removing small parts of it.

In Stonehenge, the thought that such a fantastic monument could be built by prehistoric peoples often puts visitors in awe. However, with the thought looming over that this might not be their work, the experience of visiting it can lose its magic.

In the News section, I've linked to some articles about this situation. I'd also be interested in hearing what visitors to this site have to say. E-mail me your thoughts and I'll post some of them on the site.
