John Aubrey (1626-1697)

John Aubrey, an English antiquary and writer, was born March 12, 1626
in Wiltshire, England. He was educated at Oxford at Trinity College,
then studied law in London at the Middle Temple. Later in the 17th
century, Aubrey proposed that Stonehenge was a temple built by the
Druids, the priests of the pagan Celts who came to centuries immediately
preceding the Christian era. This theory is still widely believed,
despite the fact that it was disproved in the 20th century by modern
archaeological techniques.
